The Hartford Union High School Snowboard Team is a competitive Alpine team, that started racing in 2016, racing both for the HUHS School District and Midwest Best Series. The teams are comprised of both a girl’s team and a boy’s team plus, are also both high school (9th -12th) and middle school (6th -8th) grades. We compete in the Metro Milwaukee Conference with various SE Wisconsin High Schools during the regular season and participate in team competition, at the State Championships in La Crosse, WI at Mt. LAX.
In the 2023-24 season, Hartford Snowboarding Team, secured their first State Championship title!
Team practices are held on Wednesdays and Sundays, at Little Switzerland Ski Hill, when the season begins. Once the competition season begins, practices are held only, on Wednesdays, unless otherwise scheduled.
The HS Snowboard teams take part in 12 sanctioned conference events, spread across eight race days in January and February for the competition season, according to your student’s age group. Competitions typically start on the first weekend of the new year and are held mainly at Alpine Valley in Southern Wisconsin, on Saturdays and Sundays. The events include Slalom, Giant Slalom, and Boardercross. With the potential, for the USASA invitational point system for Nationals, all middle school, JV, and Varsity teams, participate in every event. Varsity team members have the chance to earn a Varsity Letter or pin.
The events are organized by Midwest Best Series (MWB), an official club sport entity under the United States of America Snowboard Association (USASA). A few years ago, USASA merged with US Ski and Snowboard (USSA). Midwest Best hosts snowboarding competitions in SE Wisconsin with the ultimate goal, of having ALL our racers secure an invitation to Nationals in Copper Mountain, CO, via the points awarded at each weekend race.
At Nationals, both our high school and middle school compete against the nation’s top racers, as one team under MWB. In years past, we have had students place among the top 20 in the NATION, including Gold, Silver, & Bronze. This is the path to Olympic Training, if your student so chooses. For more information about those organizations please visit www.midwestbest.org and www.usasa.org. All rules, including codes of conduct and competition guidelines, can be found on the respective websites.
Our coaches hold certifications from both the USASA and the USSA coaching programs, have completed CPR training, Safe Sport training, and undergo background checks. Joining the team requires no racing experience or tryouts, but basic snowboarding skills like independent lift usage and hill maneuvering are mandatory, for all participants.
